Karate, the most essential of the arts of unarmed self-defence, is, among many other things, a protective, not aggressive, technique. It should never be used violently or with intent to maim. Though the full depth of the meaning of the word "karate" is difficult to convey, in general, we can say that it is a rigid training of both the mind and the body. A developed karate technique gives power that should never be misused.

Karate is a training of the mind and body, but it is more. It calls for support on the deep and mysterious mental powers of man that are greater than modern science can comprehend. More than a sport, more than a system of defence, karate, in its most important aspect, is a way to serenity. The karate master and the trainee, who has worked for years with this semi-physical, semi-spiritual exercise, is a tranquil man. He is calm and unafraid in disaster because he has become accustomed to the idea that every step draws us closer to death. His whole being is concentrated on achieving serenity and on bringing others to that serene state with him.
Masutatsu Oyama, What is Karate? published 1966

Find the right instructor. Make this the most important thing when it comes to choosing a martial art. Here at Aberystwyth Karate Club you will be taught by Paul James who is the most senior and experienced martial arts instructors in the area. Paul has been teaching karate at the University Sports Centre since 1992 and currently holds the rank of 4th Dan black belt. His competition highlights include being JSKA World Kata Champion, Welsh Champion nineteen times (11 x KUGB men's kata, 3 x WKF men's kata, 5 x KUGB team kata), two times European Bronze medallist and many times British finalist. He is a KUGB qualified karate instructor, Chief Instructor to the Mid Wales Centre of Excellence and one of only three Instructor Assessors in Wales. Paul has taught students from novice up to 4th dan black belt and has coached countless numbers of highly successful competitors.

Shotokan, the original Japanese Karate is by far the most popular style of karate in the world. We are affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain which as well as being the UK's largest organisation with over 400 clubs it is also the home of many of the worlds greatest traditional competitors.
